Welcome Inside the Wonderful World of Athletic Training!!!

Hello TheField readers!  My name is Jenna Street and I am a Friend of TheField.  To be more precise, I was approached by the creators of TheField to blog about my experience working within sports, recreation, and fitness as a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).  Seeing how I love my job and educating others in the field of Athletic Training, I was extremely excited!  I could not pass up an opportunity to share my experiences, how I got here, and have you join me on my path to wherever I’m going.

Currently, I am a certified athletic trainer employed by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).  I am stationed in Marquette, Michigan at the United States Olympic Education Training Center (USOEC) on the campus of Northern Michigan University (NMU).  This is one of the four Olympic Training Centers in the United States, but the only one where the athletes can train for the Olympics while attending high school and college.  The USOEC administration includes an academic advisor who works with the university to excuse the athletes from class when they travel for competitions which usually take them overseas for a week or more.

On the Sports Medicine side, there is one full time staff ATC, one fellow (me), and one graduate assistant.  The full time staff member is the only consistent staff member that stays over the years.  The Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one year position for recent graduates from graduate school, and the graduate assistant is enrolled as a full time student and NMU while working at the USOEC as an ATC.  Besides the three ATCs, there is a team physician we work with on a daily basis on top of a strong network of other health care professionals in the area that are too many to list.

Now, before I dive head first relaying the day-to-day interworking as an ATC, I would like to give some background on myself, who I am, and how I got to where I am today.  But I’ll save that for the next post.

Remember, you have to play TheField to win!
